Initial internship experience
My internship site was at the Tiffin community YMCA. The general location of the Tiffin YMCA is in a perfect location in between both universities and many surrounding neighborhoods this is the ideal spot for this organization. Within the organization I reported to the CEO of the YMCA. Steve Crone in the CEO of the Tiffin community YMCA. Steve has a lot of responsibilities and duties, has his hand in a little bit of everything that goes on in the organization. From financial planning and statements to organizing you to recreational leagues Steve overseas most of these events and projects and make sure that they are running smoothly. Doing the beginning stages of the internship my role was very simplified; it usually consisted of research and development. During the beginning stages my primary job was to research and find ways to improve youth sports and adult recreational leagues for the YMCA. I expected to work more at the YMCA and less from home. With the type project that we were heading up was very unique. Due to this unique project we had a lot of freedom and flexibility and didn't have to report to the YMCA a daily basis. Organizational culture was very interesting they were very laid-back but at the same time very professional. Tiffin YMCA was one of the most exciting places I've gotten to work, the personnel was very respectful, outgoing, and patient. Well completing this internship with the YMCA it was very different from all of the places that I previously worked. Looking in retrospect the Tiffin YMCA was a small organization with a focus on bettering the community. Everything that they did was for nonprofit which was very refreshing because it is always good to get back to the community in any way possible. Working with the YMCA was a very refreshing experience overall.
Mid- Way evaluation
Doing the internship I learned many key concepts and strategies. I learn to how to market and propose new ideas to the public through flyers and the Internet advertisement. I also had to organize you didn't don't recreational leagues, this included making schedules, sending out reminders via email, flyers, and word of mouth. I also got to look at financial statements and learn how to prioritize cording to the YMCA needs assessments. There were many situations that could've been improved looking back on the events. Major event that could've been improved was our group meetings. This time could've been used to be more productive, sometimes I felt as if we would discuss the same problems over and over again. I feel as if this was a waste of time and the time could've been used to better the company organization. I have experienced a lot of success while working with the YMCA. By working with the YMCA there were any opportunities that present themselves, working with a nonprofit organization looked very good on my resume ultimately help me get the internship at the Columbus crew for this upcoming spring semester. The CEO Steve Crone is the heartbeat of the organization, it's sad to say but without him to the community YMCA would be in serious tremolo. Working with the YMCA gave me a lot of opportunities that I wouldn't have received elsewhere. The best part about working with the YMCA was the interaction with the youth. Being able to organize youth recreational leagues was a great experience. Working with the youth was very refreshing and gave me a better outlook on children. Seeing the pure joy and excitement on this kids’ faces made all the effort and work we put into the project worthwhile. One of the major challenges I faced was working with adults. Unlike children adults are very opinionated and were not shy to let us know what they thought. On the flipside this issue gave me valuable experience, and helped me face overcome adversity.
Experience Evaluation
I don't think I would actually change anything about the organizational structure. I liked my supervisor and the projects he had us do. There was great communication between our supervisor and the group I work with. Usually communicated via email but we also had various group meetings where we discussed the direction we wanted to go with our project. My supervisor Steve Crone was very patient and flexible with our group. Working with made our jobs A lot easier because he provided very helpful feedback an efficient amount of time. I feel as if my initial expectations were met, one downfall I think of the internship was the dress code and work structure. There was never a dress code we really just had to look presentable when we have our group meetings, and we were primarily from home. Without actually looking the part and reporting to the YMCA for certain scheduled about an hour’s during the week not provide us with enough structure as we would have been the rule world.
Personal Outlook
Everything that we did during this internship at it to my personal development. From organizing youth and adult recreational league's to moving weight room equipment, all played a key role in my personal development. One major event that sticks out during his internship was working with the adults. Working with adults was are you challenging they feel as if they are entitled to everything and they want things done their way. This taught me tremendous patience and understanding, which will be key in the future with managing personnel. The job had a lot to do with my major. Being a sports and recreational management major working with the YMCA provided perfect work experience for my nature. Working with a recreational leagues and programs help highlight what it takes to be successful in this industry.
Highlights
One of the best parts of the internship was working with Steve Crone the CEO. He had such flexibility in the organization that he could give us a good hand on experience of how to handle certain events. Steve played a key role in helping us grow and understand how a nonprofit organization should be ran. It was also easy to see that he did his job because he loves it truly wants to help the community. This is opened my eyes to the recreational side of sports management. By doing this internship one realized that my future career endeavors does not involve being a manager of the local YMCA. By doing this internship it is help me realize that I want to continue my path of being an athletic director at the collegiate level which is completely different from being a CEO of a nonprofit organization. Being the CEO of a nonprofit organization like the YMCA is very time-consuming and needs a lot of dedication and consistency from its employees or it to run as efficiently as someone would bike. I would sell the individual that working with the YMCA is a great experience and is something they can help you build your resume and ultimately reach your goal.

Coordinating and assisting the Men’s YMCA recreational basketball league.
Coordinating a men's recreational league was a very time-consuming task. For starters I and my partner had to reach out to the old coordinator of recreational sports at the YMCA, after doing this we needed to compile a list of potential and previous members of the YMCA recreational basketball league. I enjoyed the task of an assistant Coordinator, while doing this task we had to market the YMCA, provide information about the recreational basketball league, from cost, time, team qualifications and additional information about the YMCA thy may have. We also had to follow up with weekly telephone calls to potential participants in the recreational leagues. When doing the specific time asks I and my partner had to keep detailed spreadsheets surveys and other information logs to help track our progress. For our reach we thought of ways we could expand our target market and also new ways to reach them as well. We suggested that the YMCA be more actively involved Social Media, we proceeded to explain that if the YMCA was more active in social media they could possibly reach the specific target market they need. We also went on to Explain that the youth and younger generations are always online and pay less attention to boring old fashion flyers. For this portion of my internship one did not have to physically be at the YMCA on campus site all the time. This allowed me to be more flexible with my research and progress pertaining to the recreational. With such flexibility also comes more responsibility, not having a specific timeline or deadline for things to be accomplished one had to compose a schedule and put aside time to achieve the task the YMCA set for me to do. By having such flexibility this required me to have a great self-discipline and forced me to set up deadlines and specific times for completing my task in a timely manner. We also had various seated meetings where we could discuss the progress of the basketball league and what we needed to change or alter. These meetings were very helpful, and helped us come up with new creative ways to market and expand your recreational leagues.

Local Food Distribution Dates, March 27, April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24, March 1
Since I have resumed my internship with the YMCA I have completed various tasks. While resuming internship at the YMCA I started delivering food to local elementary schools. Walmart provides the YMCA with a grant to purchase nonperishable foods Items for local Elementary schools. I and one of my supervisors Deena Smith pass out after school snacks and lunches to local elementary schools in the tiffin. My job is to simply help pack (if needed), distribute, and review the inventory after the food drive is done. This task simply helps me humble myself and get back to the community. We provide food for children who are less fortunate, deprived of nutrition, or simply want something to eat after school. Whatever the reason maybe over all it is a good experience and a very helpful and positive program that benefits our youth. Anyone in Elementary school is eligible for the program, and the YMCA is looking to expand our program to middle school students as well in the upcoming years. This is a great way to give back to the community and to help develop our youth and provide them with ways to live a healthier lifestyle.
There are around 150-200 students that are involved in the YMCA local food distribution. This task usually was completed by me and Deena Smith.
On 4/17/15 I had the opportunity to work with Julian and Danny, they helped me pass out food to the student this day because Deena had a conference in Columbus to attend.
On 4/24/15 I completed the food delivery with John who is also apart of the YMCA staff. Me and john accomplished the task of passaging out lunches in a record time. By working with many different employees of the YMCA I had the chance to pick their brains and see what the liked and didn't like about their current job at the YMCA. While passing out lunches I also go to see a few children I had to opportunity to coach last summer at Tiffin University's youth football camp, its is always refreshing to see familiar faces around town.
Organizing, editing, and composing work documents
I also attended several meetings with Deena Smith, Steve Crone, Carrie Fox and other YMCA supervisors and employees. These meetings we discussed various situations, from youth sports, to make the schedules, to even quarterly budget reports. I've had to organize, edit, and compose various documents for the YMCA. At the YMCA organization is key; they have a list of detailed assignments for employees to complete during their daily task. I had to edit various maintenance schedules divided up from core door areas, the aquatic center, weight room, and other YMCA entities that need maintenance on a daily basis. I had the opportunity to edit the maintenance schedules, while doing this I had the power to add task if needed, reduce task if they were outdated or not needed, and create a new list of task for the maintenance crew if needed.
Cleaning Schedules March 25, 2015 - April 5, 2015
3/25- Received cleaning schedule from Deena smith
3/27- Worked on the wellness center and meetings room cleaning list (adding and removing tasks)
3/28- Corrected the Shower, Locker room schedule along with The Offices (conference rooms, Staff break room, etc.)

4/5- Completed the final work sheets that include the field house, corridors and composed a master sheet with all the tasks along with each individual sheet for each section of the YMCA.
Youth sports meeting
Had to plan and organize participation and enrollment for you and flag football soccer leagues. I had to compose/ alter compliance, liability, and sign-up forms for both youth recreational leagues. We made packets containing multiple forms, this process of went fairly quick we had templates from prior youth leagues, with the exception of a few tweaks here and there. I had several meetings with Carrie Fox to discuss practice times for both leagues, we had to adjust the day and time to accommodate to the parents and Childs schedule. We also have had meetings with the individuals who were parents or were interested in coaching. During the month of April we held meet your coaches’ day where the players and families had the opportunity to meet the coach their coach would be working with. I am also helping as an assistant coach for the youth recreational flag football league. Me my supervisor and another intern picked a day to paint the fields for the recreational leagues both soccer and football. Prior an actually painting the fields one had to assist in finding the proper paint, paint machine, and also the size and dynamic of each field in particular. We discussed multiple sized and came to a group decision on which size fit better for our age groups.
March 29 - I had the Opportunity to meet Carrie Fox who I later found out was the daughter in- law of one of my old professors. Carrie Fox title is Youth Sports/ Child watch Coordinator. Me and another intern from Heidelberg University were given the task to come up with temples and ideas for the youth football and soccer leagues. These tasks included sign up, compliance, and liability forms to name a few.
April 1- We later came to find Templates that the YMCA used for prior youth leagues. By fol0owing the steps we had constructed forms for both youth sports football and soccer.
April 8- Meetings putting packets (printing, stapling, and distributing the information.) this was a very easy day.
April 9- We had to call several parents and coached to set up possible practice times. This was extremely difficult because you have to accommodate to not only the children's needs but the needs of the parents and coaches as well. We finally got a working schedule once we had our last member find a practice time that worked.
April 12- Paint the fields. We had to be a line painter machine fro ace hard ware. This tool helped us save paint and time, Carrie had experience in the area; she told us without the machine she used 3x the paint it took 2x longer and that the lines were not nearly as straight as they were with the machine . We also had to measured out the regulation size of a legit flag football field to give the children the best possible experience.
April 21- First Picture day at 4:30pm and 5:30pm This was the most hectic day me and Carrie worked together to knock this task out. She took the youth football and I took youth soccer. We had to pass out t-shirts, photo forms and practice time and dates. We had roughly around 20-25 kids show up this day. I could not stay this day because I had a presentation to give at 6:30pm for my night class.
April 22- we had one team show up this day pictures and practice flew by. Me an Carrie handled this flawlessly.
April 23- I wasn't able to make this Picture day I had another presentation this day that was scheduled for the same time at 6:30
April 25- Duties of adjusting the flag football rules, they YMCA had two set of flag football rules I had to use both sets and find a perfect set of rules for the children In the flag football league.
April 28- Flag Football Rule Adjustments Finalized.
Healthy kids Day YMCA
The YMCA host several events one that I had the honor of assisting with was healthy kid’s day. For this event we had multiple meetings to discuss what days in time we wanted to hold the event. My job was to simply come up with ideas for relay races and events to put the children through. These games had to be applicable for both inside and outside participation, we also want to take advantage of the aquatic center at the YMCA; this was a challenging task because we had to stay away from games that encourage children to hold their breath because this is a hazard and potentially a liability Case against the YMCA. A lot of research was done outside of the YMCA during my own personal time; I browsed the Internet and various websites for various ideas, and found some decent ones. The good ideas came in when I started to network with the coordinator of the youth and child development at World Harvest Church in Columbus Ohio. We brainstormed and came up with various ideas for healthy kids today, we also incorporated various healthy ideas into each game they were assigned to play, by men working with this Coordinator we came up with a wide range of ideas and we also explored through the templates and ideas that World Harvest used in the past. After developing these ideas I assisted the Coordinator at world harvest Church with developing ideas for their upcoming Easter service. This was a great experience not only because I got to work individually, but I also I had a chance to network outside of Tiffin and come up with some great ideas and also get work experience as well.
April 1- Healthy Kids day meeting, Deena, Carrie, Julian, Brenda, and I had me meeting to come up with ideas for healthy kids day. we talked about the possible placed to hold healthy kinds day, weather it cold be inside or outside was up completely left up the weather that day. We needed ideas that would work for inside and outside. I had the tasks of coming up with relays and actives that promoted healthy foods, I also had com come up with relays that could work for both inside and outside. We wanted to use the aquatic center, I had to look for fun interesting games that did not for the kids to hold their breath (this is against the YMCA policies)
April 5- Research and planning on my own
April 7- Meeting with the coordinator of child development at my church back in Columbus Ohio. Came up with great ideas, I had the opportunity to take some of their helpful ideas and change them a little bit to fit the event we were holding at the YMCA. I also presented valuable information ad research that the coordinator of child development used for their Easter program.
April 13- I submitted my Ideas to Deena Smith who later forwarded them the Carrie and Juliana who had were in charge of this event.

I also presented valuable information ad research that the coordinator of child development used for their Easter program.
April 13- I submitted my Ideas to Deena Smith who later forwarded them the Carrie and Juliana who had were in charge of this event.
